SURVEY ANALYSIS AND REPORT

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed education forever. This pandemic has resulted in schools shut all across the world. While governments, frontline workers, and health officials are doing their best to slow down the outbreak, education systems are trying to continue imparting quality education for all during these difficult times. This crisis has forced education systems worldwide to find alternatives to face-to-face instruction. Since the pandemic has disrupted the normal lifestyle of people across the globe, the virtual world has come to the rescue. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Online teaching and learning have been used by teachers and students on an unprecedented scale. Schools have shifted their base to virtual platforms to conduct classes online.

Learning through videos, voice recognition, automatic corrections, and live exams, are a few examples of the effectiveness of online learning. Online learning offers teachers an efficient way to deliver lessons to students. Online learning has several tools such as videos, PDFs, podcasts, and teachers can use all these tools as part of their lesson plans. Online learning offers students the accessibility of time and place in education. Another advantage of online learning is reduced financial costs.

For many students, one of the biggest challenges of online learning is the struggle with focusing on the screen for long periods of time. With online learning, there is also a greater chance for students to be easily distracted by social media or other sites.  Students and teachers also have their own struggles while accessing these online platforms. Some of the basic requirements to attend an online class include a smartphone/laptop and an Internet Connection. But many people in the country right now are struggling for basic needs and for them. It's really tough to arrange for an internet connection or a smartphone. Due to financial constraints, students are not able to access the internet and are devoid of electronic gadgets and laptops, phones or computers, or even radio and TV.

However, the government of Kerala has set an example for the entire country by making sure that during this tough time, students do not lag behind. The state with a hundred percent literacy rate managed to ensure that students of all socio-economic backgrounds have the provision to attend classes, give exams and their studies do not suffer.

The education department of the state started telecasts of online classes named the first bell shown on Victers TV channel. This helped students with no internet access to attend classes. These classes are for students of class 1 to class 12 starting from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm from Monday to Friday. The Kerala government decided to deliver meals to the homes of the kids who were registered under the mid-day meal scheme to ensure that the students get a balanced diet. The Kerala High court pointed out that the right to education was sacrosanct in the Constitution of India and is mandated under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The government has announced the launch of the Kerala Fiber Optic Network project. It aims to provide free internet access to economically backward people. These steps taken by the government of Kerala are a true inspiration for the entire country. Our survey intended to find out the challenges of online learning during the COVID 19 scenario.

Even though online learning is not a novel phenomenon, this sudden transformation into online learning has posed substantial challenges in educational activities. The family also provides support for children in their studies. Almost 84.21 % of students have the basic facilities for attending online classes and they are making use of it properly. Now online classes are only applicable for curricular activities because there are limitations for organizing extra-curricular activities online. But students feel bad for that so, care should be given by the teachers to conduct extra-curricular activities for reducing the emotional stress and issues of students during this scenario. Teachers must ensure active participation in the learning process. Otherwise, students and parents were happy and satisfied with the online delivery of lessons.
